Our Goats...You just never know when you'll be face-to-face with one of the many goats at Dancing Winds Farm. Are they different from one another? Yes! There are five distinct breeds raised here for different purposes. Remember, if you forget which goat is which, you can always ask Mairi! THE DAIRY BREEDS: Saanen - Fjords of Norway origin. These goats are pure white or sable in color. They are heavy milkers, the "Holsteins of the goat world." Oberhasli - otherwise known as "Swiss Alpines." Moderate milkers, these goats have a red bay with black markings or are all black. French Alpines - Mountain origin, Swiss or French Alps. This breed comes in many different color combinations. They are moderate to heavy milkers. THE OTHER BREEDS: African Boer - African origin. These goats are mostly white with darker heads and pendulous ears. The African Boer goat is an excellent meat producer. |
